01

Understand

Consent is a continuing conversation about diagnosis, benefits, material risks, alternatives and no treatment, shaped by what this patient considers significant. It requires capacity and voluntariness.

02

Assess

Explain uncertainty and likely recovery in plain language, invite questions and use an interpreter or accessible format where needed. Check understanding rather than simply obtaining a signature.

03

Apply

Document the decision and salient discussion. A new finding or change in plan may require renewed consent; respect a capable patient's refusal.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Key distinctions

Material risk is judged from the patient's perspective as well as clinical frequency. Explore what outcome would matter to them: altered sensation, a visible scar, time off work or failure to save a tooth. The decision must be voluntary and informed, and consent can be withdrawn. Document dialogue, not just a form and a list of generic complications.

05 / IN PRACTICE

Think through a case

A patient says that even a small risk of altered lip sensation would change their decision about lower third molar surgery. That makes the risk central to their consent discussion.

06 / EXAM PITFALL

The distinction to remember

Do not rely on a signed standard form to prove the patient understood a material, individual risk.

Test your recall

Is a signed form sufficient by itself?
