Oral hygiene and plaque control

BDS corePrevention & oral health

Demonstrate an effective brushing method and interdental cleaning suited to the person's dexterity and anatomy. Reassess technique rather than repeating generic advice.

01

Understand

Effective plaque control depends on access, technique, frequency and a tool the patient can actually use. Interdental cleaning must fit the embrasure and dexterity.

02

Assess

Ask for a demonstration at the mouth or model. Identify sites with bleeding or plaque and barriers such as orthodontic appliances, limited hand function or dry mouth.

03

Apply

Tailor brushing and interdental advice, then review the actual response. Instrumentation without daily self-care rarely gives stable periodontal health.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Key distinctions

Bleeding after cleaning does not mean interdental cleaning should automatically stop; it may reflect existing inflammation, though trauma from an oversized tool is also possible. Technique and fit require demonstration. Powered brushes, adapted handles or carer support may matter more than a theoretical ideal method if a patient has limited dexterity.

05 / IN PRACTICE

Think through a case

A patient says they floss every day but interproximal bleeding persists. Ask for a demonstration and consider whether a different interdental tool fits the spaces.

06 / EXAM PITFALL

The distinction to remember

Do not mistake verbal agreement for a workable technique. Review the site-level response after coaching.
