Interceptive treatment

BDS coreOrthodontics

Early action may help a crossbite with displacement, ectopic eruption or developing space problem. Timing and referral are key.

01

Understand

Interceptive care addresses a developing problem before full permanent dentition where early action changes outcome. Timing is more important than simply treating younger.

02

Assess

Identify crossbite with displacement, ectopic canine clues, incisor trauma risk or space loss. Consider whether a primary tooth or habit contributes.

03

Apply

Refer at a stage when intervention can help. A removable appliance that cannot be worn or a crossbite left to entrench may produce little benefit.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Key distinctions

Interceptive treatment has a narrow window for some problems. A crossbite with displacement or ectopic canine may benefit from timely action, while treatment of mild crowding too early can prolong care without benefit. The question is whether intervening now changes the later outcome, and whether the child can cooperate with the chosen approach.

05 / IN PRACTICE

Think through a case

A unilateral posterior crossbite has a mandibular displacement. Early referral may reduce the chance of a persistent functional pattern.

06 / EXAM PITFALL

The distinction to remember

Do not start an interceptive appliance without considering cooperation, eruption stage and what happens if treatment is delayed.

07

Test your recall

What makes a unilateral posterior crossbite more concerning?
